Who Will Benefit From our Fundraising?

Look around…everyone you see can benefit from our fundraising efforts. If you have a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother or friend who has been diagnosed with this “Silent Killer”, you will benefit from the research being done as a result of our fundraising.

The Queen of Hearts Foundation has been in existence for almost 5 years. Up to date, we have raised over $500,000. We are committed to supporting UCI’s Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center because they are focused on research as it relates to early detection of Ovarian Cancer.

For the past two years we contributed proceeds from our fundraising efforts to benefit projects managed by UCI. The first project was managed by Dr. Robert Burger. He is currently studying the ECA1 Protein, thought to be a validation for early detection of Ovarian Cancer. His project is continuing its research and has had promising results.

Our Commitment in the next two years is to raise $100,000 to build out the Ovarian Cancer Research Laboratory in Sprague Hall. This laboratory will have the most technologically advanced equipment in order to perform the most detailed studies. We are really excited about this opportunity.

In addition, we have committed $100,000 over the next two years to fund a project managed by Dr. Wendy Brewster.

The goal of this project is to examine the associations of genes involved in production and exposure of estrogen with ovarian cancer risk. The cases in this study will be 250 women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer, 250 women with low malignant potential ovarian cancer. The control subjects will be comprised of women without cancer from Southern California. Data on hormonal factors, and blood samples will be collected from the case and control subjects. Ovarian cancer tissue will be obtained for confirmation of the disease and will be examined for gene expression. Comparisons will be made to measure if the risk of low malignant potential and invasive ovarian cancers is modified by the variations in the expression of genes responsible for the production and metabolism of estrogen.

The specific aims of this study are

  1. To create and to characterize three populations-based groups of women with
    1. low malignant potential ovarian cancers
    2. invasive epithelial ovarian cancers
    3. population-based age-matched unaffected controls
  2. To determine if
    1. the role of ordered reproductive events (birth control pill use, age at first and last childbirth, age at menopause etc) and;
    2. Estrogen metabolic genes CYP17, CYP19 and COMT are associated with susceptibility to low malignant potential and invasive epithelial ovarian cancer in comparison to controls.
This project will provide insights into the influence of the order of reproductive events and the role of estrogen metabolizing genes on the risk of development of low malignant potential or invasive ovarian cancer. This information will identify the factors that elevate a woman’s risk for ovarian cancer and suggest interventions to reduce risk.

Furthermore, our most recent commitment to UCI’s Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center is, for two years, fund a ObGyn fellow who has a passion to further study oncology in his field. His studies will be specific to Ovarian Cancer research.

As you can see, we are passionate about our fundraising efforts and have a lot of work to do. We hope you will help to accomplish our goals – to one day have ovarian cancer a treatable disease!

What Inspires Donors?
Donating to the Queen of Hearts Foundation is so important because there are few foundations who specifically raise money for early detection research for Ovarian Cancer. Ovarian Cancer is considered the most deadly gynecological cancer, striking 22,500 women and killing 15,280 every year in the United States. Presently, there is no early detection test for Ovarian Cancer. As a result, 75% of the women diagnosed have late stage disease and only 12% chance of surviving 5 years. We are working hard to change these statistics by allocating our funds to early detection research. With your support, we can work towards realizing our goal: The day when Ovarian Cancer screening is routine and the disease is treatable.
